Installation of Mac OSx86 in VMware

Last two weeks i tried to install Mac OS X Tiger x86 into my PC after i got to know that Mac OS was able run on x86 machine. I found many sites do guide the installation of Mac OS x86. There are various way to install the OSx86 but what i want to show here is a very simple installation with the use of VMware Workstation 5.

Why i created this guide is because i was mad while facing the problems during installation. What i wanted to do is just try it on VMware but i found myself stupid after i get to know the installation.

This is the screen shot of Mac OS Tiger running on my VMware 5.

Mac OS Tiger x86 in VMware

Firstly, you must have the following files & software before you start your Mac OSx86 installation:

  1. tiger-x86 image file. [tiger-x86.tar.bz2]
  2. VMware Workstation. [ I'm using VMware Workstation 5]
  3. Minimum 6 Gigabytes hard disk space.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Step 1: Install VMware Workstation into your PC.

Step 2: Extract “tiger-x86.tar.bz2″ file into any folder. You can use WinRAR to perform the extraction. Please remind that the data files from “tiger-x86.tar.bz2″ is 6 gigabytes size. So please make sure you extract it into a sufficient free space hard disk drive and the hard disk partition format/type is NTFS.
( if your partition is FAT32 or older format, you will be facing extraction error because FAT32 supports a single file size up to 4 gigabytes only. [ I encounter this problem twice before i get to solve this. my stupidity.. :P ]

Step 3: After everything is ready & VMware is installed, launch the VMware Workstation now.

Step 4: Now select “New Virtual Machine” icon or go to menu “File”->”New”->”Virtual Machine”.

Step 5: At first dialog screen, click “Next”. In “Virtual machine configuration”, select“custom” and click “Next” button.

Step 6: For “Virtual machine format”, select “New-Workstation 5″ and click “Next” button.

Step 7: When asking about “Select a Guest Operating System”, select “Other” from the radio button. And Select “Other” also from the drop down list of “Version” selection.

Step 8: In “Name the Virtual Machine”, you are about to name your virtual machine name and select the location of your virtual machine. You can give any name for the virtual machine but i chose “Tiger” as the name. Now, “Browse” to the folder that contains the extracted files of tiger-x86 image [tiger-x86.tar.bz2]. Your folder should have following files: floppy.flp, tiger-x86.nvram, tiger-x86.vmdk, tiger-x86.vmsd, tiger-x86.vmx, tiger-x86-flat.img, and some .log files.

Step 9: After select the location of the folder, click on “Next” button. You will be seeing a message dialog box about “…Having two virtual machines installed in the same location can cause problem…”. Just click “Yes” from the message box.

Step 10: Now you will have to specify the amount of memory allocated to the virtual machine. If you have large memory in your PC, you can allocated more to the virtual machine else i would recommend to allocated at least “Recommended memory” size [green pointer] from the dialog box. Just click on “Next” button again once you specified the amount of memory.

Step 11: In “Network Connection” options, choose “Do not use a network connection” for now and click “Next” button.

Step 12: In “I/O adapter” types, select “Buslogic” from SCSI Adapters.

Step 13: Now you will see the “Disk” dialog box, select the second option, “Use an existing virtual disk” and click “Next” button.

Step 14: After you chose to use an existing virtual disk, you are required to select “the existing disk file”. Thus, just browse to the extracted folder and select the virtual machine disk file. The filename is “tiger-x86.vmdk”. After select the file, just click on “Finish” button. Then the message box will totally disappeared from the screen now but the VMware Workstation is still there. Don’t worry.

Step 15: Mac OS Tiger x86 is ready to launch now. Just select “Start Virtual Machine” from “Tiger” virtual machine or click on the Green Arrow button ( PLAY button) on the top left corner of the VMware.

CONGRATULATIONS!! You shall enjoy your Mac OS Tiger x86 in your VMware now.

Looks like you have done a great job here. :)

    Cheers !!

  2. skyfish - September 11th, 2005 at 11:44 am

Hope that you guys can try it out without any problem. It is good to try for a new OS like Mac & Linux.

    Hope you guys like it.

  3. skyfish - September 11th, 2005 at 12:13 pm

Guys, i found out another way that doesn’t need to do so many steps.
you just select “Open Existing VM or Team”, then browse to where ur .vmx file located. After selected it, you just play it. However, virtual machine settings is predefined if you choose to use this method. So if you want to make any changes on that virtual machine, you need to click on the “edit virtual machine” and do whatever you want for the changes.

I will post another Fast & Easy Installation of Mac OS Tiger in VMware later.

  4. nottellu - November 1st, 2005 at 12:00 am

thanks for the guide, what about networking, does it work

  5. nottellu - November 1st, 2005 at 1:14 am

One more thing, how is the speed comparing to installing on a harddrive, thx

  6. skyfish - November 1st, 2005 at 12:47 pm

Actually there is another very simple way to do it with VMware for Tiger. As the earlier comment, i mentioned that i would post another guide for that but unfortunately i did not. So sorry for that but i will keep my word until i found a place to stay in. The simple way is something like this, you just SELECT existing VMWare file & browse to your downloaded tiger-x86.vmdk. Just as you open an existing file and it will work. You may require to change the virtual machine configuration to meet your needs.

About the networking stuff, i can’t manage to test it out because the Tiger in my PC is very slow. Will try it out when i get a clean HDD. If you don’t mind, i can send some link for the guide to your email.

Enjoy the MAC~! I was playing around with my Boss’s G4 now. kekeke

  7. witzer - November 6th, 2005 at 11:12 pm

i’ve tried it. it worked. but it’s working real slow. sluggish. anyway to speed up things in vmware? i also can’t get the itunes to work.

  8. dave - November 7th, 2005 at 8:15 pm

i checked out some forums and it discussed using ppp for networking…….however i’m stumped, does anyone know an easier way or has d steps to do it?

  9. raju - November 8th, 2005 at 3:12 am

Need some help, installed as described, but the os just hangs on the apple boot screen, got a pic of an apple with a “clock” going round the outside. Left it for a couple of hours but got nothing. any ideas as to what could be wrong?

  10. josh - November 9th, 2005 at 9:29 am

yeah, i’m also have problems with it going incredibly slow, does anyone know how i could speed it up? i have an external 300gb hd which i could maybe partition or something, but i don’t know if that would od anything. any thoughts?

  11. albert - November 12th, 2005 at 8:35 am

To speed the system up, open the hard drive.
Now double-click Library and then Extensions
    Delete the file AppleTPMACPI.kext
If asked for password for deadmoo, the password is bovinity
Now empty the trash and restart Mac OS X Tiger

The reason is that this file searches for an Intel chip, using lots of the system’s resources, causing the system to respond extremely slow.

  12. skyfish - November 12th, 2005 at 11:24 pm

    witzer, dave, raju, & josh:
Very sorry that i just managed to reply you guys here. I have been searching the “speed” problem but unfortunately it is limited information. However, i’m very appreciate that we have Albert’s help here.

According to his guide, we need to remove the “AppleTPMACPI.kext” files from the /Library/Extensions folder. and empty the trash before restarting Mac OS.

Please refer to his comments bout the guide.

Anyway, I will try this after i reinstall Tiger in my VMware because i just formatted my PC last few weeks :P . hehehe

  13. sethhman - November 14th, 2005 at 11:21 am

ok, how do you go to the hard drive and then through library etc. to delete that file when OSX isnt booting? i checked my C drive and i didnt find any of those folders, how to you physically get to that file? thanks

  14. sethhman - November 14th, 2005 at 11:33 am

and also, im running an AMD 2400+ ~1.99GHz, not 64-bit, and a geforce 5200FX 256MB 8x AGP video card
if you need any more information just ask

  15. raju - November 16th, 2005 at 4:41 am

Sethham, i to am running on AMD 2400+… could this be a problem?
also is there a way to view the tiger virtual hard disk through my standard os? ie can i delete the file without booting into tiger?

  16. raju - November 16th, 2005 at 4:43 am

alternativly the fact that we are running AMD’s could be a problem?

  17. yokohama - November 17th, 2005 at 9:21 am

Same problem, It boots and appear the apple with the thing going round but that’s all, I leave it for 6 hours and nothing, maybe it is because I’m using an AMD system?

    System: A7N8X-Deluxe, 2800XP Barton, 1Gb Ram, S-Ata Stripe HD, FX5200, Win Xp Pro Sp2.

    Thanks.

  18. yokohama - November 17th, 2005 at 9:40 am

    Just foud this…
You need a SSE2 or SSE3 capable cpu, download CPU-Z to find out. If you only have SSE2 and not SSE3 then only x86 binarys will work because for ppc binarys you need Rosetta which requires SSE3…

  19. raju - November 18th, 2005 at 6:53 am

    me only running SSE… :-(

  20. albert - November 20th, 2005 at 5:00 am

sethhman, you have to go to the hard disk inside Mac OS X tiger (when it is done booting), not in your Windows C: drive. After Tiger is done booting, inside the VMWare virtual machine screen, you will see a hard disk icon on the desktop of Tiger.

  21. Nick - November 21st, 2005 at 1:29 am

I can confirm that what Albert is saying is true… removing the file will drasticly speed up the system.
Oh btw: its located: /System/Library/Extensions/ and not just plain library/extensions :)

You can actually speed it up about 10-20% more. Just create it as custom, Linux and linux unknown. Read that somewhere and it works too.

    Enjoy…

  22. sethhman - November 21st, 2005 at 9:55 am

the problem is that it NEVER gets done booting, i load the image and boot up and all i get is the apple logo and the spinning circle thing
i cant access the hard disk because it doesnt finish booting
do i need to go into more detail?

  23. sethhman - November 21st, 2005 at 10:17 am

ok so i’ve been hearing a lot that you need SSE2 or 3 for this to work
i ran a diagnostic and found out my computer only has SSE, so thats probably the problem and i can quit this whole deal until i get another computer, right?

  24. skyfish - November 24th, 2005 at 12:08 am

sethhman: ya, it works in SSE2 or SSE3 but not SSE computer. So sorry that i didn’t mention that in the guide. I tried it in my Centrino Laptop but the drawback is the performance is very slow. I did not try to speed up the Tiger by removing the files according to albert guide. It seems really helpful. sethhman, may be u can try it in other computer if you get a chance to do so because it sounds nice if we can run Mac in our normal PC.

  25. raju - November 24th, 2005 at 7:58 am

What happens if you remove the file on a pc with SSE2 and then try it on SSE pc?

  26. skyfish - November 25th, 2005 at 12:04 am

raju: this im not very sure. may be Albert will help u in this question. Currently i only have one pc with centrino processor. So i can’t really test it out also. I doubt the chances of success is very low for that. Anyway, you can try it and tell us the outcome. That could be a good try.

  27. raju - November 27th, 2005 at 2:31 am

will give it a go when i go home for xmas- got an intel at home…

  28. packman - November 29th, 2005 at 10:14 am

Thus, just browse to the extracted folder and select the virtual machine disk file. The filename is “tiger-x86.vmdk” When i try to do this is keeps teelling me that this is not a virtual machine disk file. Can you help me Thanks

  29. Snuffaluffagsu - November 30th, 2005 at 4:04 am

man this is an awesome thing worked with no problem. This is much simpler than the other guides I have attempted. I read alberts speeding up help and I think I will try that now. Is there any way to use networking with it yet or is that still being developed by these brilliant people that developed this thus far.

  30. skyfish - November 30th, 2005 at 10:58 pm

packman: what do you mean by keep telling you that your file is not a virtual machine disk file? did you extracted the file properly and the file that you point to is it .vmdk extension? would you mind to describe more details so that we can have big picture of your problem.

  31. skyfish - November 30th, 2005 at 11:15 pm

guys, i really glad that this post really help you guys with my little effort in installation guide. As if you read the earlier comment, i promised to comeout another simplest installation. I will only do that once i move in new house and get internet connection.

If you guys find other better solution, hope you guys share to us as well.

  32. gangsterlyrical - December 5th, 2005 at 2:01 am

Just found a link that will help get networking to work…thought I would pass it along:

    http://www.paulooi.com/2005/10/15/vmware-network-mac-osx-x86/

On mine (10.4.1) the sudo password is: bovinity

I’m using VMWare 5.5 and networking is working great. Next I’m looking for sound drivers…

  33. MG - December 19th, 2005 at 6:04 am

I get an error message that says “Failed to retrieve disk information for “C:\Documents and Settings\……etc…..\tiger-x86.vmdk”
“The specified file is not a virtual disk”

I don’t know what is going on here. Does anyone have a working virtual disk that you can e-mail me, or does anyone know a solution to my problem. I really want to run OSX on my PC.

  34. MG - December 19th, 2005 at 7:35 am

    Please help me ASAP. Thanks.

  37. skyfish - January 4th, 2006 at 11:33 pm

MG & Fran: maybe u should try another “tiger-x86.tar.bz2″.

Tu Hai: I just go http://www.thepiratebay.com to search for “tiger x86″. the link is http://thepiratebay.org/details.php?id=3368775

My copy of tiger-x86.tar.bz2 is also gone now… because it is stored in my external hdd and my external hdd cannot be detected at all since last week… damn it..

Now how exactly do I install Mac OS X onto my actual HD?

Should I burn Ubuntu Linux Live CD and try or what?

I want to install it Mac OS X so I can have both Windows XP and Mac OS X on my HD otherwise it was a waste of $$$ on OS X Tiger!!

  42. Jonathan - February 11th, 2006 at 10:15 am

Is there any way to force it to start in a higher screenresolution, or maybe change somehow ?

  43. FuLLY - February 23rd, 2006 at 1:30 pm

MG & Fran: Change place of image directory!!!!
    c:\Docs …..\…..\… is TOO long.
    Try c:\Mac

  44. john - February 23rd, 2006 at 11:56 pm

anyone try porting this to vmware player? I’d love to get it working in that.

Also, I overwrote the contents of tiger-xe6.vmx. I have no bit-torrent here at work, so can someone please post the contents of that file?

  45. john - February 23rd, 2006 at 11:59 pm

whoops, the above file I reference is tiger-x86.vmx (I made a type above)

  46. shirokuma - February 24th, 2006 at 11:34 am

I tried your procedure for booting OSX in VMware. It was easy to follow but I got some errors. First it said that “VMware Workstation cannot open default input sound device: A device ID has been used that is out of range for your system.” I disabled the audio device and was able to continue. But then I got a kernel panic. “Unable to find driver for this platform: “ACPI”. Do you have any ideas?

  47. Hudobec - February 24th, 2006 at 1:14 pm

“The specified file is not a virtual disk”

That has happend, becuase u are using fat32 system, which cannot operate with so big files. So it has extracted only 2Gb of file,…..so that is why your file is “damaged”. Try installing on NTFS.

  48. FuLLY - February 25th, 2006 at 9:38 am

The root password for deadmoo version is bovinity
Just change it to what else you want, and you will be able to have FULL acces on the configs :-)

Where can I find audio, locale and keyboard drivers for use on vmware 5.5?
    Thanks.

  49. Eduardo - March 1st, 2006 at 5:29 pm

    Spanish, plis:
    Me sale un mensaje :
Your virtual machine has sent an ATAPI (CD-ROM) command that is supported only when programming the drive via DMA. You will need to configure your guest operating system to use DMA when communicating with DVD/CD-ROM devices.
Note that some operating systems will report DMA is available without actually using it. In those cases, normal CD-ROM operations will still be available, but special features will only be available if you reconfigure the virtual device as a SCSI device.
    That I need to make?
    Thank you

  51. Jeff - July 10th, 2006 at 11:07 pm

Thanks for the great guide! Got it booted and networking is working!

Now, I’ve heard so many great things about “Quicksilver” that I thought I would give it a try. No luck though! When I launch it the icon “zooms” and then disappears. None of the hotkeys seem to work. Has anyone gotten it working? Or is there something wrong with this release?

  52. Stiphy - August 10th, 2006 at 11:28 am

I got it working on my P4-M based laptop with SSE2. My desktop which is an Athlon Mobile 2000+ running at 3000+ speeds with SSE only hung on the apple screen. I got the networking running per the tutorial above. Removing that file and changing the type to Linux/Other Linux sped things up to the point where it is almost useable on my laptop with a 2.2Ghz P4-M chip with 1gb of ram (512 allocated to vm).

I have one big problem. Safari comes up but whenevever I browse to a location off of the home page it crashes entirely. Any thoughts?

  54. macvm - February 7th, 2007 at 2:46 pm

AppleTPMACPI.kext is actually a dir not a file. to remove it, you might want to boot up the VM in single user mode.
Mount the filesystem in read-write mode..

“/sbin/fsck -y”. (Type this without the quotes, of course.)
“/sbin/mount -wu /” (This mounts the volume “/” with read/write access.)

    and then ..
    rm -rdf /System/Library/Extensions/AppleTPMACPI.kext

Reboot and you are good to go ..

“The specified file is not a virtual disk”
I had also such problem. Finally I have realised, that the problem is in unpacker. Neither Total Commander nor WinRar was able to correctly extract tar.bz2 (I am not sure which step failed – bunzip or tar). Resulting image was then only about 2GB in size instead of 6GB. When I have extracted the archive in Cygwin environment using standard (GNU?) bunzip2 and tar, everything went correctly.

i installed the 10.4.1 using “tiger-x86.tar.bz2″ on vmware 5.5, and after bumping up the speed by deleting” AppleTPMACPI.kext”

    here are the current stats:

Most usual applications like safari, finder, email, ichat, address book, iphoto, ical, terminal, quicktime, preview, sherlock, stickies are working

dvd player, itunes, sound, software updates, OS updates, installing new applications, flash are not working. (anybody have any possible solution)

Network working perfect , tutorial from http://www.paulooi.com/2005/10/15/vmware-network-mac-osx-x86/

Safari working perfectly, but cannot update,

    OSX 10.4.1 cannot do updates.

could anyone please post a new and latest .tar.bz2 or a new .iso please, or possibly post solutions for the above mentioned glitches.

BTW, thanks to all who contributed to make this, we r so close to perfection…

    cheers!

I can confirm that what Albert is saying is true… removing the file will drasticly speed up the system.
Oh btw: its located: /System/Library/Extensions/ and not just plain library/extensions

You can actually speed it up about 10-20% more. Just create it as custom, Linux and linux unknown. Read that somewhere and it works too.

    Enjoy…

The proof that it can be done is (ahem) done, but that leaves most people with an ass backward slow OS running in a windows bubble.

Whats now needed is a way to configure the VM to run at a decent pace. Any thoughts aside from deleting AppleTPMACPI.kext (which helps a lot I admit)?

    Information ought to be free!

After this when i click Finish nothing happens.. The Windows never closes I can cancell or Back .. finish doenst work… I reinstall VMWare 6.0.2 and still nothing..

[...] Rogue copies of OSX Leopard and Tiger have been running on VMWare for awhile but because most of the drivers are unsupported and not optimized, it is a dog on performance.  An Apple blessed and supported version of this would allow a huge leap forward in speed and performance.  It would also mark a big change of direction for the company who has always had a zero tollerance policy for Virtualizing OSX. Hello all, i just did this today, the first boot didnt work, i think mac os froze, cause i couldnt do anything once it got to the desktop… second one worked, accept IT IS FRICKEN SLOW and just changing the data and time took FOREVER (maybe like 5 minutes or more…) its alot slower then running xp in vmware… but ummm about 700mb to the ram, not sure about the cpu, but vmware only shows it as one core……

but other then that, seems fine just to test a few things out on… havent tried to get network to work but gonna do that now

    Hi,
I need to install Leopard 10.5.3 on my XP machine. I am unable to find its image file. Can I only buy the OS and install using the above method onto my windows XP machine?

I installed it like mentioned, but when i run it, it doesn’t load past the apple logo and says “you need to restart your computer” then it says it in 3 other languages. When i restart the VM it just does it again. Is there a way around this?

  86. jay - June 28th, 2008 at 1:23 pm

works absolutely perfect!! ive been looking about for a leopard VMware image, none to be found, tho there are lots of cracked .iso’s, tried at least 5 different versions, iatkos kalyway etc in vmserver, none got passed initial boot, only got …preparing to install…but never does, just hangs…

THIS however (even tho its tiger) worked 100%, tho it was dog slow, then saw the trick for deleting that .kext file, now it flies!!!

    cheers guys
